The American Petroleum Institute (API), founded in 1919, is the largest petroleum and natural gas industry association in the United States. API 5L specification is generally the standard for pipe suitable for use in conveying gas, water and oil in the natural gas and oil industry.
This specification establishes requirements for two product specification levels (PSL I and PSL 2). The grades (see the note) covered by this specification are the standard Grades A25, A, B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70 and X80; and any intermediate grades.
Requirements for API 5L pipes are based on International Organization Standard ISO 3183, establishing standards for pipeline transportation systems within the offshore materials, equipment and structures for the natural gas, petroleum and petrochemical industries. At the time of writing the standard, the Technical Committee recognized that there were two basic product specifications (PSL) levels of technical specifications and therefore developed PSL 1 and PSL 2. PSL 1 is the standard quality for cable conduit that PSL 2 has. Chemical-mechanical properties and additional testing requirements.
